Happy New Year! The bringing in of the Spanish new year is a little different. They bring in the New Year by eating grapes for each of the bells counting down to midnight. So with the ringing of each bell (campanada), you eat 1 grape…a total of 12. This is to bring good luck for the coming year. You only have good luck, though, if you have eaten ALL the grapes by the last bell. The grapes taste terrible to tell you the truth! There are giant seeds in them and the skin is like chewing rubber. All that fancy packaging for nothing! At least I’ll have good luck for the coming year!
So I thought for sure that there would be a million people out and about around the Cathedral for New Year's, like any other big city. There is a huge bell tower on the Cathedral so I thought that's where they'd ring the bells. So I walked there around 11 pm or so, only to find absolutely no one! There wasn't so much as a soul outside anywhere. Even all the bars where closed. What the hay?! I was shocked and disappointed. So I got a cab back home in order to watch the festivities going on in Madrid on TV and eat my lucky grapes....

That's a really cool tradition, we'll have to do it next year with you!
Your trip to Amsterdam sounds like it was miraculous! I love all the history and information about all the places you went...and this sister happens to love the food entries, so don't be apologizing! I had to wipe the drool off my computer. Ha, ha!
I'd be kinda freaked out to eat the grapes! Sounds like you are having a blast Kristina.
